Meet
Jake

The 14-year-old community hero

In our homes, we’re so lucky to have so many volunteers who we welcome of all ages. But every so often, someone comes along who reminds us just how powerful intergenerational connection can be.

Jake, a 14-year-old student from Buckingham School, is one of them.

What began as part of Jake's Duke of Edinburgh Award has grown into something much more. Twice a week Jake visits Lace Hill Care Home in his own time, ready to spend time with residents and, most importantly, sit down with Neil for their weekly game of chess. Neil, who lives at Lace Hill, holds a special place in Jake’s heart, and their friendship has become something everyone looks forward to.

Our Lifestyle team has loved watching this friendship develop, and Lizz is one of the team. members shared:

“It’s so lovely to see Jake visiting Lace Hill. Watching these two generations connect over such a classic game, offering advice, guidance and sharing stories with each other, you can really see the difference it makes to the people living with us.”

For Jake, he doesn’t have to be here. He chooses to be, because he loves it and genuinely enjoys giving back.

“I come to Lace Hill as I love volunteering and giving back. I started coming here as part of my Duke of Edinburgh, but I love it so much that I have continued to come. I really enjoy playing chess with Neil and I just enjoy watching everyone have fun. My mum and dad are really proud of me and my grandad is too.”

Neil shares his advice, Jake brings his energy, with all the people living in the home. The pair laughing, thinking, sharing stories. The room fills with wisdom from every angle. It’s a reminder that connection isn’t about age, it’s about kindness, time, and the willingness to show up.

Jake brings all of that, every week.

His presence is something both the people living here and the people caring for them genuinely look forward to, and we’re incredibly honoured that he has chosen to be part of the Lace Hill family. Volunteers like Jake help create the warm, lively atmosphere we’re known for, and they show just how much impact one young person can have simply by giving their time.

Thank you Jake, for everything you bring to our home. You are a true hero among us.
