Kirsty’s Story- Why Lifestyle Care Matters Just as Much as Clinical Care
When we talk about care homes, the conversation almost always starts with what clinical care is needed. What medication is needed? Is it nursing care or residential? The essentials to keep people safe
But if you pause for a minute and ask, “What would I need if I lived in a care home? The answer may change.
Suddenly it’s not all about safety. It’s about the dignity you will receive, the activities that go on, and the atmosphere that makes every day feel worth getting up for.
We’re Not Residents. We’re People.
Nobody wants to be seen as a room number. No one wants to be seen as a task. We’re all people with preferences, routines and reasons to get dressed in the morning. We want people to know how we take our cup of tea, what music makes us nostalgic, and the small things that make us who we are.
Our Lifestyle Programme
Kirsty plays a key role in enhancing the day-to-day experiences of our residents. She works closely with our Lifestyle Teams, supporting them in delivering meaningful activities and implementing our More… Lifestyle programme across our homes. This includes focusing on the social side of things, personal interests, and more reasons for the people living with us to feel happy and fulfilled in their homes.
The Power of Looking Forward to Something
A single moment can sometimes prove the power of having something to look forward to. Kirsty remembers a very unwell gentleman. She mentioned to him that a concert was happening the next day and invited him to join. As she left to go home that evening, a nurse told her it was unlikely that he would make it through the night.
But the next morning, Kirsty arrived, and when she walked in, he was ready to go to the concert with his jacket zipped up and waiting in the lounge. A moment of hope could well have been the reason he made it through the night.
Why Lifestyle Care and Activities are Transformational
A walk in the garden. A concert. A baking session. A trip to a football ground. These moments give people a reason to get up each day. And the team that makes them happen, our lifestyle team, are true heroes.
